How are we feeling about the coming year as far as hardcore goes? I'm thinking we're at capacity for accessible, poppy, mainstream crossover hardcore and we're about to go back underground. Prepare for more gatekeeping. Being at FYA and seeing so many heavy bands and so many violent sets has me thinking that, I'm also thinking about my local scene where we've lost 2 DIY venues in the span of a year and we're starting to see less and less new kids at shows; we've now filtered back down to the same core group of people attending shows while during 2022-2023 shows were a "holy shit, EVERYONE is here" type thing. Anyone agree or feel differently? What trends have you noticed?

"Mainstream" is such a difficult label to apply, because after 90s hardcore, nu-metal and big metalcore, I feel like anything can become mainstream if those channels bigger than us choose to pick up on it. Streaming might make it easier to keep being a mainstream band, since we're relying on those numbers and not soundscan stuff anymore. We're losing venues over here many times over as well, and I hope we can get more local support for newer bands and not have to rely on huge fests to keep this shit moving.
I still struggle with answering questions like "where is hardcore going" because I don't know how kids get here in this day and age. Shit's so far removed from MTV, Myspace, and e-cards. Everybody born in the year I graduated high school is 18 now and may have been conceived to Hinder or Story of the Year or some crazy shit like that.
