Do you remember the "I academically studied punk" girl on Tik Tok that everybody goofed on with their tweets earlier this year? Everybody who likes punk in the modern age actually is this person, but no one wants to admit that. I think that's what we're really trying to say every time there's this punk vs. hardcore mini-battle on Twitter, but no one seems to be able to spit that out or articulate that properly.

Punk is cool but anyone who tweets “don’t trust a hardcore kid who doesn’t listen to punk” are always in the upper echelon of corny motherfuckers who probably only listen to “entry level” punk.

Punk is cool but anyone who tweets “don’t trust a hardcore kid who doesn’t listen to punk” are always in the upper echelon of corny motherfuckers who probably only listen to “entry level” punk. What's really fascinating to me is that every time the whole "punk as a precursor to hardcore" thing comes up in the hardcore discourse, people speak about it as if you couldn't just walk into a Hot Topic at any point in the past 25+ years and buy that whole aesthetic. The "Punk is dead" mindset has been around for the entire time I was into music and for longer than most of our entire lives. Oldheads would yell at you about Good Charlotte co-opting the punk image and selling it out to MTV, but that style had already filtered out by that era because the bands that did it once either had broken up long ago (Sex Pistols, Black Flag) or were an absolute shell of what they once were (Dead Kennedys), and some of the bands that were still around and touring absolutely split the punk base because you could no longer pool those bands together due to them all having their own definition of what punk was (US Bombs, Bad Religion, NOFX, The Descendants, The Casualties...). And this was in the early 2000's, and we're so much farther out from that now. If you knew anything about The Germs back then, you had to be doing some nerd shit because that band was gone for a long time even back then. Punk is fine, and is obviously foundational when talking about this kind of subculture, but you have to admit that the style is archaic in the very same way that bluegrass and jazz have been, and no one really gives a shit if you arrived to where you did via a more "correct channel" of this style of music.

Other gay points:
-Have you ever seen people make fun of like, Motley Crüe and Kiss for being old and no longer able to perform? That shit goes doubly for any 70s/80s punk bands who are still around, which is embarrassing because those songs are not too terribly hard to play compared to metal bands and the like. 40 oz. beers and stick and poke tattoos really take their toll on those hands.
-I'm pretty sure most of this punk affirmation and the "bring back fast hardcore" bullshit is a knee jerk reaction to Knocked Loose and Code Orange blowing up in recent years, and people trying to shift away from that because they're basically in A Day To Remember territory now, and not rising above the basements is how people think they leverage that shit with oldheads. The bands people like in this scene are playing that hand in the same way; Cold World saying that shit about KL/Jesus Piece and having the shittiest punk openers at their NYC show is an example of that.

i was not into punk prior to finding hc. i found it through metal > metalcore. i like some punk now. it doesn't really matter how you got into it because there are so many paths. every time this point comes up on twitter it's the most tired, boring dork mother fuckers regurgitating it.

Rather see Motely Crüe or KISS before I see those reunion bands plop their near death hollow shells of bodies on a fucking stage and milk oldheads for every penny they got. Shit Ozzy probably rocks harder than most people these days. Yeah I did notice the bring back fast hardcore shit start popping up around the time Code Orange started doing huge metal fests so def a reaction to that and dorks wanting to be holier than thou. I’ll always embrace the deathcore and metalcore I was listening to before hardcore, I didn’t come out the womb blasting Madball and neither did anyone else. What did Cold World say??

CW's Bape hoodie drummer that spearheaded the whole "buying sneakers online from resellers" movement went on some sort of podcast a few years ago and said something kind of disparaging toward deathcore derived stuff being filed under hardcore. He said Jesus Piece in the interview; on Twitter, he corrected himself to say that he meant Knocked Loose (I feel like he probably feels that way about both bands, but didn't want to risk anything if JP got billed with them on a fest). Both bands were kind of bummed about what he said; I don't fuck with podcasts, so I can't say what it was exactly that he said or even where it was that he dropped that.
I want to look for that now, but I have to go to work. A cursory search revealed that he did that podcast with the Fucked Up guy, but I think that was too early for the drama I'm talking about here.

this is a convo that i've had with a few people recently -- i think the specifics of how the music sounds matter a lot less than the ethos of the band making it. if a band has the ethos of a hardcore band, i'll consider it a hardcore band even if their music isn't strictly "hc"

It’s more than just music.
